The Romans have had almost every type of government there is. They've had a kingdom, a republic, a dictatorship, and an empire. Their democracy would be the basis for most modern democracies.
Would you want to live in the ancient romans time?
Ancient Roman Government
The Roman government is a strange mix of a democracy and a republic. A lot of people took ideas about government from the Ancient Greeks.
The Roman state was like the republic and its consuls continued to be appointed even after of the one-man rule under the empire. When the republic created, supreme power probably resided with a popular assembly. S.P.Q.R. (Senatus Populusque Romanus) was the popular assebly that survived for centuries.
The Ancient Romans didn't want just one person to rule everything and make all the laws. They wanted to balance the power of the government between 3 branches. The executive branch, legislative branch, and the judicial branch.
Roman Economy
A lot of people have wondered how the Roman economy was and worked. There are a lot of things that could have happened. But there are two main beliefs that it was either simple or just a bit more complicated than simple.
Some people think that the Roman economy was simple. Everybody was a farmer and grew their own food. They didn't go to stores and buy things with money; they had to build it on their own clothes and furniture. They didn't sell what they built either, they weren't really into selling things. But every couple of months, tax collectors would go to peoples' houses and take their food. They would then bring it back to the city and feed aristocrats, slaves, the soldiers in the army, and some to the emperor, and his court and the people of Rome. Some people call it the "consumer city" model. If all of this was true then people would expect for them to live in simple houses with simple tools.
Some also think the Roman economy was a little bit more complicated. Everybody was a farmer, but instead of eating their own food. They would sell their food and use the money to go buy furniture, tools, clothes, and food that they need. They could be able to pay their taxes in cash instead of by food. But the cities then gave them shops where they could sell their food and buy the things they would need. If all of this is true, you would've seen people with more decent houses and better tools.
All the people in the Roman time were farmers for a fact but still used some money to buy their necessities.
